Moissanite, Morganite, and Diamond: What's the Difference?
If you're looking for a custom engagement ring to pop the big question, diamonds are naturally the first option that spring to mind.
However, there are plenty of alternatives that a growing number of people are buying for their partners. Right now, moissanite and morganite are two of the most common options.
So, which is best? Here's all you need to know about diamond, moissanite, and morganite.
Diamond
Diamonds gained popularity for engagement rings in the 1940s, and their appeal shines as brightly as ever. They are a classic choice and very durable; however, they can be very expensive.
There are both natural and laboratory-made diamonds. Some people prefer the laboratory-made stones due to ethical and environmental concerns with how the diamonds are mined. However, we only carry and sell the real thing: natural diamonds.
Diamonds are rated on four characteristics: clarity, color, cut, and carats. These aspects affect the quality, beauty, and price of the diamond.
Moissanite
In 1893, Dr. Henri Moissan was studying a meteorite in Arizona when he discovered a small, new mineral. It was named moissanite after him. The rarity of the natural mineral means that the moissanite we use for jewelry today is laboratory-made.
In many ways, moissanite is very similar to diamond. It is clear and nearly colorless, although some will have yellow or brown hues, similar to lower-grade diamonds. Moissanite stones are also nearly as hard as diamonds.
The biggest difference is in cost. Moissanite is much less expensive than diamond, so if you want a bigger stone with the sparkle and shine of diamond but without the high cost, moissanite is the way to go.
Morganite
Morganite is a naturally-mined stone, which gives it an advantage over moissanite for people seeking something natural. It is closer to a diamond in that sense, but the appearance is vastly different.
Many people refer to morganite as the “pink diamond.” Because of its pinkish hue, morganite can be a great choice for non-traditional custom engagement rings using white gold or rose gold bands.
People also love the meaning behind the morganite gemstone. Morganite is connected to divine love and emotional healing. It is said that morganites help with releasing heartbreak and turning grief into wisdom.
This gem is a variety of beryl, like emerald and aquamarine. It is significantly less expensive than diamond, but is still a beautiful, unique, and stylish choice. We have a large selection of morganite rings to prove it.
Which Stone Is Best?
When searching for custom engagement ring stones, there is no one right answer. Morganite carries a unique appeal due to its color; moissanite is a budget-friendly emulation of diamond; and diamond is the traditional standard. But there are plenty of other beautiful gemstones not on this list!
After considering personal preferences, budget, and other factors, you can choose the stone that best suits your loved one’s style. That’s the beauty of a custom ring: it’s personal.
